A CASED COLLECTION OF FIVE ROMAN NAILS FROM THE INCHTUTHIL FORTRESS HOARD, circa A.D. 83-87, five iron nails of various sizes from circa 8 in. to 2 in., mounted in a glass-fronted wooden display case with a hard plastic label stating 'IRON NAILS / FROM ROMAN LEGIONARY FORTRESS / AT / INCHTUTHIL, PERTHSHIRE. SCOTLAND / A.D. 83-87', Inchtuthil Fortress was situated on the north bank of the River Tay, representing the only complete plan of a legionary fortress anywhere in the Roman Empire, it was built in AD 82 or 83 as the advance headquarters for the forces of governor Gnaeus Julius Agricola in his campaign against the Caledonian tribes and was abandoned in A.D. 86 or 87; when excavated, a pit was found in the summer of 1960 containing some 10 tons of nails and other iron objects buried by the troops to deny them to the local tribes when after the fortress was evacuated
