* A .75 PERCUSSION BOBBEJAANBOUD MUSKET CONVERTED FROM FLINTLOCK BY LEVICK & SHERMAN, CIRCA 1835, no visible serial number, with 41 1/2 in. barrel engraved with retailers name at breech, 'LEVICK & SILVER CAPE TOWN', together with a starr both attractively inlaid with silver, the barrel is fitted with a bead front-sight and hinged leaf rear-sight, the breech has a drum and nipple conversion bolster, borderline engraved lock with stepped tail, embellished with some foliate engraving and bearing the retailers name 'LEVICK & SHERMAN CAPE TOWN', full walnut stock with raised cheek-rest, chequered wrist, and fitted with nickel silver mounts, including the trigger-guard and butt-cap which are also decorated with good quality foliate scroll engraving, the barrel is secured to the stock by three flat keys, with nickel silver escutcheons, the musket has a single set trigger, and a replacement P53 style rod.

Provenance: In its day this was a good quality musket of a pattern preferred by the Boers and unique to South Africa, it was the musket of the Great Trek and used in the early battles with the Zulus including Blood River (Dec. 1838). The retailer Levick & Sherman were established in Cape Town circa 1833-72.
