A 50-BORE PERCUSSION SPORTING-RIFLE, SIGNATURE OBSCURED, MODEL 'AMERICAN PLAINS TYPE', no visible serial number,
circa 1840, possibly converted from flint by drum and nipple, with heavy octagonal 36in. barrel, the muzzle rounded with traces of engraved decoration, white metal blade fore-sight, standing notch rear-sight, solid plain top-tang, bar-action lock of flint form with traces of an oval stamped makers mark and address, walnut 'Roman nose' half-stock burnt in imitation of stripy maple, brass furniture including large oval patch-box, crescent heel-plate with additional toe-plate, spurred trigger guard bow with raised lower tang and moustache sideplate, double set triggers, white metal nose-cap and wood ramrod with burnt spiral decoration
