AN 8.15x46R BOLT-ACTION SINGLE-SHOT TARGET-RIFLE, UNSIGNED, MODEL 'SYSTEM MAUSER', serial no. 81546,
circa 1875 and converted from an earlier external hammer example, with blued octagonal 29in. barrel, the top-flat MARKED 'GUSS-STAHL', the side-flats signed 'CHR. FRIEBE SEIN' and 'IN MUHLHAUSEN' respectively dove-tailed plain rear-sight with two additional uncut folding leaves, dove-tailed fore-sight with side protectors, octagonal form plain receiver with short straight bolt handle (traces of colour), no provision for safe, plain top-tang mounted with a pan-headed aperture sight, walnut half-stock with chequered wrist and expertly inlet panels filling the apertures for the original lock and side-plate, carved raised cheek-piece, Swiss heel-plate, plain spurred trigger-guard with integral scrolled grip, double-set triggers, plain fore-end with the tip carved in the form of a dog's head with inlet glass eyes, brass plug to the original clearing rod aperture, strong traces of original finish and fitted with a period leather sling (worn)
