circa 1867, with 20in. barrel, block and blade front-sight, rear-sight missing, marked at breech 'WHITWORTH PATENT', the breech flap stamped 'WESTLEY RICHARDS / PATENT' and the triangle trademark, the lock with 'WESTLEY RICHARDS' to the centre and the date of manufacture '1867' within a triangle on the tail, brass mounted full walnut stock, the top band with a bayonet lug, complete with sling swivels and refurbished rod, the fore-end shows evidence of a repair or join
Provenance: This carbine was one of 2000 such carbines purchased by Portugal in 1867 for issue to the cavalry. In 1873 they were modified for issue to the artillery with the sling bars removed and new front barrel bands with bayonet lugs fitted
