for 1866, with 7 1/2in. octagonal sighted barrel with one-line signature 'ADDRESS COL. SAML. COLT. NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA', open iron frame marked 'COLT'S PATENT', roll engraved six-shot cylinder, brass grip-strap and trigger-guard, one-piece walnut grips, the left grip struck with Enfield inspection mark, matching numbers throughout including wedge (some surface corrosion marking), London proof marks and traces of original finish
Provenance: 4000 Colt 1851 Navy revolvers were ordered by the Egyptian Government who insisted that they were inspected by Enfield first. Shipping commenced in 1866, and most guns observed all have an 'L' prefix or suffix to the serial number as well as the distinctive Enfield roundel stamp to the left grip.
