A CASED 5mm PINFIRE POCKET REVOLVER, UNSIGNED, MODEL 'LEFAUCHEUX TYPE', no visible serial number
Belgian made but Austrian proved, circa 1865, with Austrian market 4 1/2in. octagonal barrel, the fore-sight bead mounted midway along the top-flat, scroll engraving behind the fore-sight to breech, engraved cylinder with external ratchet lock, engraved open frame (ejector-rod absent), smooth flared ivory grips and folding trigger, retaining much nickel-plated finish, action at fault, together with a possibly associated walnut storage case compartmented and lined in blue baize and containing an oil-bottle, a number of spent cases for the pistol and the case key, the lid with shield shaped escutcheon (loose but included)

Other Notes: Austro-Hungarian law at the time stated that pistols of certain calibres could be possessed without permits if the barrel length was over a certain length. Enterprising gunsmiths exploited this legislation by supplying off-licence long barrelled pistols with the fore-sight mounted in the correct position for a short barrelled example, fully expecting the buyer to shorten it themselves.
