A GOOD 25-BORE PERCUSSION SPORTING-TARGET RIFLE, no visible serial number,
circa 1840, with fine damascus octagonal 28 3/4in. barrel, the top-flat signed in gold 'A.W. EDLI IN LEIPZIG' within a silver gilt border (small losses to inlay), dovetailed fore-sight, dove-tailed rear-sight with elevating blade, gold line at breech, carved scrolled snail, border and scroll engraved breech-block and top-tang, the latter featuring a bordered panel of a standing stag in gilt, the rear of tang fitted with a moulded square socket containing an aperture sight adjustable via two key-ways (key included), borderline and scroll engraved bar action lock and carved dogs-head hammer, the former with a bordered panel on the bar containing a gilded recumbant deer, walnut full-stock with basket-weave chequered panels surrounded by carved acanthus scrolls, carved cheek-piece with a further panel of acanthus carving on a stippled ground behind, iron hinged patchbox engraved with scrollwork around a gilded depiction of a hunter with a killed stag, moulded and engraved iron heel-plate and complex trigger-guard with raised lower tang, the bow with a gilded engraving of a mountain goat, double set-triggers, engraved iron ramrod throat with plain thimbles, carved ramrod channel, three barrel keys with engraved oval escutcheons, moulded bone fore-end tip and iron mounted mahogany ramrod
