A RARE .52 SHARPS MODEL 1852 CAPPING BREECH LOADING CARBINE CIRCA 1853, serial no. 4090, with 21 1/2 in. barrel rifled with six grooves, fitted with brass blade front-sight and tangent rear-sight, back-action lock stamped 'C. SHARPS / PATENT / 1852' and fitted with Sharps pellet primer mechanism, brass mounted two piece walnut stock, the butt with rectangular patchbox, long sling-bar fitted on the left-side, anchored on the breech and to the brass barrel band, the barrel to a brown patina, the stock with some wear, repair to wrist and a large chip to toe of butt, a rare carbine and worthy of restoration

Provenance: The Model 1852 Sharps was the earliest Sharps having the distinctive relief and contoured slanting breech, another distinguishing feature is the long retaining spring to secure the action hinge pin, the M52 was made 1853 to 55 with approx. 5000 being made, generally in the 2000 to 7000 serial range.
