28in. replacement nitro barrels (circa 1958), rib engraved 'STEPHEN GRANT & SONS, 67A. ST. JAMES'S STREET. LONDON.', 2 3/4in. chambers, bored approx. 1/4 and 3/4 choke, H. Phillips patent sidelever lever-cocking action, patent no. 4809 of 1879, carved fences, manual safety with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' detail, topstrap engraved 'PATENT', action engraved 'STEPHEN GRANT' and engraved with fine scrollwork, brushed finish overall, 15 1/8in. well-figured stock including 1 1/8in. wooden extension, escutcheon bearing crest of mermaid with mirror and comb, with motto 'CREDE BYRON', weight 6lb. 12oz.

Provenance: The crest and motto on the escutcheon of this shotgun belong to the Byron family and the makers have kindly confirmed that it was built for Lord George Byron with 30in. barrels in 1880.

He was born 27th December 1855 and was a cousin of the 6th Baron, commonly known as Lord Byron. Byron was schooled at Harrow before going up to Oxford where he obtained a B.A. at Christ Church. He then served as Lieutenant with the 4th Battalion, Essex Regiment.

Byron married Fanny Lucy Radmall in 1901 but had no issue. On his death in 1917 the title passed to his younger brother, the Rev. Frederick Byron.
