A SUPERB CASED 40-BORE PERCUSSION SINGLE-BARRELLED SPORTING-RIFLE, serial no. 3604,
for 1879, with blued octagonal slightly tapering 28in. two-groove barrel, radiused muzzle, matted top-flat fitted with blade fore-sight and standing notch rear-sight with twin additional blades, the left hand top-flat signed 'JOHN DICKSON & SON' continuing on the right hand top-flat '63 PRINCES STREET EDINBURGH', engraved colour hardened squared breech-block with engraved platinum plug, fully engraved colour hardened top-tang, border and scroll engraved colour hardened lock signed on the bar 'JOHN DICKSON & SON', en-suite hammer with sliding safe behind, figured chequered walnut half-stock with raised cheek-piece, blued iron furniture including chequered heel-plate and chequered spur to the lower tang, single barrel-key, turned ramrod pipes and brass-mounted ebony ramrod, the whole rifle in a remarkable state of preservation retaining virtually all its original finish, colour and polish and complete in its maker's leather covered oak case lined and compartmented in red baize and with a full suite of original accessories. The rifle is accompanied by a file of paperwork on the Chisholm family

Other Notes: This beautiful rifle was commissioned by or for Roderick Donald Matheson Chisholm of Chisholm (1862-87), was the 28th leader of Clan Chisholm. He became clan leader (The Chisholm) in 1885 on the death of his father but unfortunately only held the office for two years, dying young at only age 25
