A RARE J.V. NEEDHAM 12-BORE 1862 PATENT SIDELEVER SINGLE-BOLT SNAP-ACTION SELF HALF-COCKING BAR-IN-WOOD PINFIRE HAMMERGUN, serial no. 4812, 29 7/8in. damascus barrels, sunken rib engraved 'J.V. NEEDHAM. 27 CANNON ST. NEW ST. BIRMINGHAM', action incorporating Needham patent rotating single bolt sidelever patent, patent no. 1544 of 1862, use number 1056, the fences with external cams half-cocking the hammers as the sidelever is pushed down, sidelever engraved 'NEEDHAM'S PATENT', slim fences and side bolsters, non-rebounding sidelocks (some pitting to edges) with low-spurred pinfire hammers, one a replacement, permanently attached fore-end (minor losses to edges) with horn finial, feathered border and fine acanthus scroll engraving, 14 5/8in. stock including steel buttplate, weight 6lb. 14oz.
