A .450 (3 1/4IN.) BLACK POWDER EXPRESS TOPLEVER DOUBLE HAMMER RIFLE, serial no. 3431,
for 1877, 28in. bold damascus barrels with broad file cut rib, open sights with two folding leaf sights, with fine scroll engraving and white metal sight lines, marked for 100, 200 and 500 yards, the tubes engraved 'JOHN DICKSON & SON. 63 PRINCES STREET EDINBURGH', Henry patent rifling, Adams & Tait use numbers 3387 and 3388, carved percussion fences, slender action marked 'JD&S PATENT ACTION' on the flats, Purdey double bite, patent no. 1104 of 2nd May 1863, use number 4260, non-rebounding back-action locks with bolted hammers, fine border and acanthus scroll engraving, some patches of surface rusting, 14 1/2in. figured pistolgrip stock with cheekpiece, engraved steel pistolgrip-cap, sling eyes and steel heel and toe plates, fore-end with hooded Anson push rod release, weight 8lb. 9oz.

Provenance: The makers records state that the rifle was made as a double breech-loading hammer rifle in .450 calibre, sold on 14th February 1877
