possibly built for trials circa 1860, with tapering round twist-steel 18 1/2in. barrel, small blade fore-sight, block rear-sight of a standing notch with two additional folding leaves, top-mounted Needham patent bolt with butter-knife handle and marked 'NEEDHAM'S PATENT 954' below the top-mounted safe, slender walnut half-stock with iron saddle-bar and heel-plate, spurred brass trigger-guard tang

Provenance: this rare, possibly unique carbine is built with Needhams conventional needlefire bolt but mounted for top loading. A service musket on a similar principal, serial no. 854, is shown in Blackmore's book 'British Military Firearms', page 224
