A .577-450 (M/H) SINGLE-SHOT SPORTING-RIFLE, MODEL 'SWINBURN'S PATENT', serial no. 832,
circa 1890, with round 33in. barrel, raised matted full-length sighting-rib signed in gilt in a panel behind the rear-sight 'GEORGE ARMSTRONG, CRADOCK' together with the serial number, the left side of barrel marked 'HENRY'S PATENT A&T 3717', dove-tailed bead fore-sight adjusting for windage via a worm and key (key absent), 'Africa' rear-sight with provision for seven flush folding notchless leaves (one absent), scroll engraved slab-sided action, the centre of the left hand side marked 'SWINBURN'S PATENT', safety catch to right hand side, chequered straight hand butt-stock (cracked and repaired on one side of wrist), borderline engraved smooth iron heelplate, side mounted patchbox, short under-lever chequered arch, traces of engraving to trigger-guard bow, walnut chequered splinter fore-end with moulded horn tip and eyelets for sling, the metalwork cleaned and refinished, now stained to brown with some loss to detail
