A 24-BORE FLINTLOCK SINGLE-BARRELLED SPORTING GUN, no visible serial number,
circa 1800, with 42 1/4in. barrel, scroll engraved flat bevelled lock signed 'BENOIT PENEL', walnut half-stock (reduced from full), engraved iron mounts including side-plate, later iron ramrod (some pitting throughout).
Other Notes: There is a large family of gunmakers by the name of Penel recorded as working in St. Etienne during the latter part of the 18th century and the first quarter of the 19th century.
