JOSEPH EGG, LONDON
A CASED PAIR OF 38-BORE PERCUSSION DOUBLE-BARRELLED CARRIAGE-PISTOLS WITH BARRELS BY PURDEY, serial no's. 528,
and almost certainly converted from flintlock by Purdeys circa 1828, with 6in. side-by-side twist barrels, the top-ribs signed 'J. PURDEY, PRINCES ST. LEICESTER SQUARE, LONDON', bead fore-sights, flambé needle engraving to rib-end at breech, engraved platinum plugs, fully engraved top-tangs with shallow sighting grooves, borderline and scroll engraved bar-action locks signed 'JOSEPH EGG, LONDON', scroll engraved slab-sided dolphin headed hammers, walnut half-stocks with chequered bag-shaped butts, blued trigger-guards with scroll engraving and brass mounted ebony ramrods, both pistols retaining a fair amount of period finish and colour and complete with a mahogany storage case, flush fitting circular handle with central vacant escutcheon to lid, the inside of case lined and compartmented in dark green baize, original 'HENRY EGG' parchment trade-label inside lid (losses to edges) and together with a scissors ball-mould, pair of nipple cleaners, loading rod, bone nipple-pot and Eley cap-tin.

Provenance: Chronologically, these pistols were almost certainly manufactured by Joseph Egg as flintlocks circa 1810 and subsequently re-sold (or possibly still on hand) when Henry Egg, the son of Joseph took over the business circa 1826. Purdeys then did the conversion to percussion in around 1828 suggested by the barrel serial number.
