26in. nitro chopperlump barrels with matt sight rib, open sights and two folding leaf sights marked for 100, 200 and 300 yards, ramp-mounted bead fore-sight with flip-up moonsight, the tubes engraved 'HOLLAND & HOLLAND. 98. NEW BOND STREET, LONDON.', the rib engraved '.400. BORE.', slight dent to left muzzle, treble-grip action with hidden third bite and removable striker discs, carved foliate fences, toplever engraved 'ROYAL EJECTOR', elongated top strap with automatic safety, gold-inlaid 'SAFE' detail, hand-detachable lockplates, gold-inlaid cocking-indicators, articulated front trigger, rolled-edge triggerguard, best bold Royal scroll engraving, retaining much renewed colour-hardening and finish, 14 7/8in. boldly-figured pistolgrip stock with cheekpiece, engraved steel pistolgrip-cap (with trap), sling swivels (rear re-located), including 1 1/4in. wooden extension and 1in. rubber recoil pad, weight 10lb. 3oz., in a re-lined brass-cornered oak and leather case with Holland & Holland (Bruton Street) trade label
Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that this rifle was completed in 1927 for a "Stanley"
Further research would indicate this to be Colonel the Right Honorable Sir G. Stanley of 46, Cadogan Square
Lieutenant Colonel Sir George Frederick Stanley (14 October 1872 – 1 July 1938), sixth son of Frederick Stanley, 16th Earl of Derby, was a British soldier and Conservative Party politician who served as a member of the UK Parliament for Preston and later, Willesden East. He also served the Governor of Madras from 1929 to 1934 and as Acting Viceroy of India in 1934.
