Product Details

AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE BOXED EARLY .177 WEBLEY & SCOTT PRE-WAR 'MKI DOUBLE SPRING-CLIP' AIR-PISTOL, serial no. 296,
for 1924, with 7 1/8in. rifled barrel held closed by twin spring clips mounted to the breech-block, the left face of which marked 'PATENTS APPLIED FOR', the breech of barrel not reduced in diameter, blued stepped air-chamber, the right hand side unmarked, the left with 'WEBLEY AIR PISTOL MKI' and 'WEBLEY & SCOTT LTD. BIRMINGHAM & LONDON', four pin trigger group without provision for trigger weight adjuster, rotating safe and smooth straight walnut grips with the Webley 'winged bullet' trademark medallion inlet into the left hand example, the whole retaining much original finish; together with a first style box and rare blue card carton of Webley Special pellets marked 'THE NEW WEBLEY MKI AIR PISTOL', spare leather washers and a cleaning brush (box stained, lid with taped repairs to corners)

Provenance: When introduced, the MKI Webley air pistol was equipped with a single spring-bar barrel retaining latch. This was quickly found to be inadequate for the job and after serial no. 100, a second bar was introduced on the opposite side and remained part of the manufacture until approximately serial number 700, when a new method was designed (see Lot 82 in this sale). The double spring clip method of barrel retention also proved unsatisfactory as with use, wear caused the barrel to be difficult to release and also was found to badly score the breech end of the barrel in operation
