A SCARCE .177 PRE-WAR HUBERTUS AIR-PISTOL WITH RARE ORIGINAL INSTRUCTION LEAFLET, serial no. 8555,
large version circa 1930, with 'in the white' rifled 4 3/4in. barrel with milled bands at the muzzle, blued air-chamber with dove-tailed fore-sight and fixed rear-sight, blued receiver with sliding locking ring, blued frame signed 'D.R.G.M. HUBERTUS GERMANY' and plain smooth one-piece walnut grip, strong amount of finish remaining together with a rare printed multi language instruction leaflet on pink paper
Provenance: One of the most over complicated air-pistols to ever have emerged from pre-war Germany, Mr Malcolm Atkins says of the Hubertus in his book 'Gats-A Guide to Junior Push In-Pop-Out Airguns'; "The Hubertus"- Or take a really simple idea and make it so much more awkward, alternatively, find a non existent problem and add lots and lots of complications." The cocking procedure for this air-pistol is as follows:
First push the barrel all the way back into the receiver until it stops. Next, slide the air-chamber locking ring backwards, releasing the receiver upwards for loading, then, take a pellet or dart and load the breech, making sure the barrel does not get accidentally pushed forwards. Shut the gun and lock with the locking ring, then pull the barrel back out to its original position, taking care not to shoot yourself in the hand. Finally the pistol is now ready to fire. How anyone put up with this procedure and bought these is a miracle, but it has resulted in the little Hubertus being a rare item today
