early type circa 1863, with blued 20in. octagonal to round barrel, applied fore-sight, ladder rear-sight, squared receiver marked 'UNION RIFLE' on the right, plain back-action lock signed 'GWYN & CAMPBELL PATENT 1862 HAMILTON O.' and with large elongated hammer, walnut butt-stock with clear martial cartouche at head, iron crescent heel-plate and 'grapevine' under-lever, no provision for fore-end, the whole retaining the majority of its original finish and colour throughout
