* AN UNUSUAL HERRMANN, BERN 20-BORE PERCUSSION SPORTING-TARGET RIFLE, serial no. 100, Swiss circa 1845, with heavy round micro-rifled 35 1/4in. barrel signed 'HERRMANN' at the breech along with a shield-shaped maker's stamp and the date '1553', small dove-tailed fore-sight, large elevating rear-sight with a tangent side-scale, the top of barrel engraved with a central line bisected at intervals with range markings, no provision for tang-sight, fully fenced snail, plain bar-action lock bearing the serial number and 'IN BERN', plain heavy walnut half-stock with 'roman-nose' butt, raised cheek-piece, heavy Swiss-style iron heel-plate, double-set triggers with finger-grooved quick release trigger-guard bow and tang, moulded iron fore-end cap and substantial wood ramrod with jag end, the side of muzzle with square socket, possibly for a bayonet and fitted with a period leather sling (distressed)
