A RARE CASED 54-BORE PENNELL'S PATENT PERCUSSION REVOLVER, RETAILED BY W. RICHARDS OF LIVERPOOL, CIRCA 1853, no visible serial number,
with 6 1/2in. octagonal Birmingham proofed barrel, with fitting for its detachable loading lever, the top flat engraved with the retailers name 'W. RICHARDS 153 DALE STREET LIVERPOOL', plain six shot cylinder, foliate engraved action body, finely chequered one piece walnut grips, with oval domed buttcap with trap, belt hook removed, detachable loading lever missing, contained in its original green baize lined and partitioned oak case, the lid with fitted brass carrying handle, partitions solid, lining dirty and lid lining removed

Provenance: The Pennell revolver, a hammerless transitional type of revolver is one of the rarest of all English percussion revolvers. Patented in April 1853 by Thomas Pennell, gun and pistol maker of 95 Bath St. Birmingham, the patent (provisional only) detailed a completely enclosed lock mechanism and hammer, a method of attaching the barrel to the frame by a swivelling bolt and for a detached rammer. Sold by retailers in the larger British cities, the retailer of this example was established at 153 Dale St. 1851-58
