AN INTERESTING BRASS-BARRELLED FLINTLOCK BLUNDERBUSS PISTOL BY JOHN WATERS, serial no. 239,
circa 1785, with 7 1/2in. lightly swamped brass barrel with turned cannon shaped muzzle, under mounted triangular bladed spring bayonet and side mounted steel ramrod, one piece barrel and action, the action body with decorated borders inscribed on the right 'WATERS & CO' and on the left 'PATENT / No. 239', fitted with centre cock, one piece rounded walnut grip terminating with a silver grotesque butt-cap, double triggers, the front trigger fires the gun and the second releases the spring bayonet

Provenance: The maker was John Waters of Birmingham in business circa 1766 to 1788, who is generally credited as being the inventor of the spring bayonet, he was granted British Patent No 1284 of 9th March 1781 for attaching bayonets to pistols, William Grice contested the claim saying it was his invention but the patent stood. John Waters died on 7th February 1788
