A PAIR OF ROUND BODIED CANNON-BARRELLED FLINTLOCK POCKET PISTOLS BY KING, CIRCA 1750, no visible serial numbers,
2 1/2in. turn off barrels, turned cannon shaped muzzles, the undersides struck with London gunmakers proofs and the crowned 'F' foreigners stamp, round bodied foliate engraved actions with central banners, the ones on the right bearing the makers name 'KING', and on the left 'LONDON', central cocks, one piece walnut butts inlaid and attractively decorated with silver wire, with white-metal grotesque or Medusa's mask butt-caps

Provenance: Pistols with the round boxlock actions are rare and generally date the 1750 to 1790 period, the maker was probably William King, free of the Gunmakers Co. circa 1732 and allowed to prove guns as a foreigner, he worked from premises in the Minories in 1777 he became master furbisher to the Board of Ordnance and died in 1780
