A GOOD .650 BAKER TYPE VOLUNTEER FLINTLOCK RIFLE BY STAUDENMAYER AND MANTON, CIRCA 1798, no visible serial number,
30in. barrel rifled with seven grooves of slightly rounded form giving 1/4 turn in length of barrel, fitted with a patent chambered breech and engraved 'STAUDENMAYER LONDON', small blade fore-sight, the underside a small stud for a sword bayonet, fixed vee rear-sight, borderline engraved flat style lock with stepped tail bearing the name 'MANTON' to the centre, brass mounted full walnut stock, the fore-end slit to prevent to prevent jamming of the rod, two rammer pipes, nosecap, patchbox, scroll trigger-guard, and long tanged butt-cap engraved with the number '4', complete with sling swivels and original rod
Provenance: This interesting rifle probably predates the Baker and was made in the 1790's for a gentleman volunteer in one of the numerous units that mushroomed at that time. The rifle was made by John Manton and the barrel by Samuel Henry Staudenmayer who was a specialist in rifle barrels and at one time an apprentice of John Manton
