39in. barrel with baluster turned breech and bearing Tower private proofs, borderline engraved lock of rounded form bearing the Crown 'G.R'. cypher to the centre, ring-neck cock (probably a replacement), full walnut stock of New Land style with low comb and standard wrist, regulation pattern brass mounts including buttcap engraved '17' on the tang, three rammer pipes, trigger-guard, wrist escutcheon and large Elliot pattern side-plate, complete with a socket bayonet and its black leather scabbard, chape missing
Provenance: This musket was made for a volunteer or private militia unit during the Napoleonic wars, such units mushroomed at that time. It has some differences to the Board of Ordnance pattern musket, with the improved New Land style stock with the barrel keyed not pinned and the lock is of reduced carbine size
