A CASED .38 (RIMFIRE) FIVE-SHOT REVOLVER, MODEL 'NEW MODEL POLICE CONVERSION', serial no. 7982,
circa 1870, factory converted from percussion, with nickel-plated octagonal 3 1/2in. barrel, the top-flat signed 'PATENTED SEPT. 14 1858. MARCH 17 1863, E. REMINGTON & SONS, ILION, NEWYORK, U.S.A.' and 'NEW MODEL', applied crescent fore-sight, sighting groove to the top-strap, solid plated frame, plain cylinder with detachable back-plate, external hammer, guarded trigger and smooth walnut grips, some loss to plating, some stamped details deliberately erased from the left hand side of frame, possibly police issue details, in a later wood box manufactured in the form of a book and lined and compartmented in green baize with provision for ammunition
