Product Details

CLOUGH BROS, BATH
AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE .577 (SNIDER) SMOOTHBORE CARBINE, MODEL 'SNIDER PRISON SERVICE CARBINE', serial no. 2775,
converted from an 1858 Pattern Artillery Carbine, with smoothbored 21 3/4in. barrel, the last inch at muzzle swaged down to produce a choke and intended for use with a special shot cartridge, block and blade fore-sight, small ladder rear-sight, flip-open breech marked 'SNIDER'S PATENT', borderline engraved lock dated and signed 'CLOUGH BROS. BATH', walnut three-quarter stock with brass furniture and two iron barrel-bands, the muzzle retaining bayonet bar and complete with a jag-ended iron ramrod

Provenance: Reference, Skennerton, 'Treatise on the Snider', page 143. This example appears to have been privately procured, probably for a gaol. Only 330 pieces were officially produced by Enfield as it was found to be dangerous if a ball cartridge was fired by mistake instead of the special shot cartridge
