A GOOD 10-BORE PERCUSSION SINGLE-BARRELLED FOWLING-PIECE, serial no. 916,
circa 1835, with 43in. triple-staged browned damascus barrel, the top-flat at breech signed 'JAMES WALLACE & CO, EDINBURGH', scroll engraving and twin platinum bands at breech (traces of colour), scroll engraved top-tang elongated with an extension piece engraved with a rope-twist design, border and gamescene engraved back-action lock signed 'WALLACE' in script below the hammer, walnut half-stock chequered at the wrist with vacant panel on the left in imitation of the lock, iron furniture and brass mounted mahogany ramrod
Other Notes: James Wallace of Edinburgh is best remembered for his famous apprentice John Dickson who started with James Wallace in 1806. He continued with Wallace and rose to become foreman of the firm. Between 1828 and 1838 Wallace was at 63 Princes Street with John Dickson as his foreman. This is the period when this gun was built and no doubt John Dickson built much of it. James Wallace retired in 1838 and John Dickson set himself up in business at 60 Princes Street but returned to 63 Princes Street under his own name in 1848.
