for 1864, 30in. nitro reproved bold damascus barrels (in 1974, converted to 28-bore from a 40-bore rifle calibre), the tubes engraved 'CHARLES LANCASTER. 151 NEW BOND ST. LONDON.', 'PATENT BREECH LOADING SMOOTH BORED RIFLE', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. 1/4 and 1/2 choke, Charles Lancaster patent slide-and-tilt action with rotary-underlever, recessed bosses, striker discs, non-rebounding back-action locks with bolted high-spurred hammers of hare's-ear form, the breasts of the hammers hitting the strikers, best bold acanthus scroll engraving, the lockplates with 'C. LANCASTER LONDON PATENT' in scrolling banners, the action bar with 'CHAS LANCASTER'S PATENT', chequered triggerguard tang, 14 3/8in. well-figured stock with cheekpiece, chequered steel buttplate, the tang with a wolfhound and '2', the fore-end with crosspin release and horn finial, weight 7lb. 3oz.
