EASTBOURNE'

Provenance: We are kindly informed by the vendor that this gun was previously the property of Dr John Bodkin Adams, one of the founder members of the British Association of Sport and Medicine and Honorary Medical Officer of the Clay Pigeon Shooting Association. He died in 1983 after suffering complications after a fall and a fractured hip whilst shooting in Battle, West Sussex. Charged with the murder of one of his patients in 1956 (and acquitted) he was suspected of having been involved in a great many more patient deaths, mostly elderly, who died whilst in a comatose state. He was branded a serial killer by the press and though he was never prosecuted for murder he was struck off the Medical Register for four years for forging prescriptions, making false statements on cremation forms and for offences under the Dangerous Drugs Act of 1951. The impact of the murder trial was significant, establishing in law the doctrine of 'Double Effect' whereby a doctor giving treatment with the aim of relieving pain may lawfully, as an unintentional result, shorten life. It also resulted in a change to the law to enable defendants to ask for committal hearings to be held in private following the sensationalist publicity the trial attracted before it had even begun
