A FINE & RARE CASED PAIR OF 50-BORE PERCUSSION TARGET-PISTOLS, serial no's. 1370,
circa 1840, with browned fine damascus octagonal 10 1/4in. smoothbore barrels signed on the top-flats ain script 'G.W. BALES, CORNHILL IPSWICH', bead fore-sights, dove-tailed standing notch rear-sights, colour hardened squared patent breech-blocks with scroll engraved panels and twin gold lines, moulded snails with platinum plugs, border and scroll engraved colour hardened top-tangs, border and scroll engraved colour hardened bar-action locks signed 'G.W. BALES, IPSWICH', scroll engraved slab-sided hammers with engraved dolphin heads and moulded noses (both hammers cracked at neck) and with sliding safes behind, French polished walnut half-stocks with chequered full pistol-grips capped with engraved colour hardened flat-based iron pommels with broad sculpted margins, blued square-backed trigger guard bows, double set triggers and engraved blued moulded iron nose-cap with no provision for ramrods, both pistols with virtually all apparently original colour and finish and appearing little used, complete with their makers mahogany case lined and compartmented in green baize, the inside of lid with 'BALES' parchment label and containing a small bag-shaped flask signed 'SYKES', a scissors ball-mould, a nipple key and cleaner and a later loading rod, wad-punch and sundry cleaning items, the case also in fine condition
