A RARE .550 FLINTLOCK PISTOL, MODEL '1756 PATTERN SEA-SERVICE', no visible serial number,
dated for 1759, with iron slightly swamped 12in. barrel, moulded band at breech and maker's mark 'W.G.' (for William Grice), squared dove-tail shaped solid top-tang, flat, slightly curved lock with pointed tail signed 'IORDAN' together with the date, crown device below the lozenge shaped pan, bridleless square-topped frizzen, walnut full-stock (loss to front upper edge on right hand side), brass furniture including bulbous butt-cap and original oak ramrod with iron worm end
Provenance: This style of pistol for Sea Service was introduced around 1718 and remained little changed until the Napoleonic wars. The 1756 pattern is the second type and only had minor differences in the furniture to the original. Edward Jordan was a principal supplier to the Ordnance between 1733-58 manufacturing not only complete arms but also barrels and locks as required. His son Thomas took over upon his fathers death and continued supplying the Board until 1762.
These pistols are rare in any condition. Please note however, despite the provision, it was never fitted with a belt-hook.
