A RARE PAIR OF 1880 PATENT 12-BORE ROUND-ACTION NON-EJECTORS, serial no. 4097 / 8,
28in. sleeved nitro barrels, the ribs engraved 'JOHN DICKSON & SON. INCORPORATING MORTIMER & SON. EDINBURGH', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. imp. cyl. and 1/2 choke, Dickson 1880 patent round actions, patent no. 294 of 23rd January 1880, use numbers 186 and 187, built on 1st pattern patent ejector actions, the No.2 gun fitted with first pattern ejector, with single pin in action with all in one kicker/compressor and single extractor with independent ejecting tabs (at fault), toplevers engraved '1' and '2', gold pin cocking-indicators, automatic safeties with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' details, profusely engraved with fine acanthus scrollwork and with the makers name in scrolling banners, brushed finish, 14 3/4in. figured stocks, No.1 including 5/8in. buttplate, weight 6lb. 8oz. (No.1) and 6lb. 11oz. (No.2), in a brass-cornered leather case with reproduction John Dickson panoramic trade label
Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that the guns were delivered on the 8th August 1887 for the 10th Marquis of Tweedale - and, though specified as non-ejector guns are built on very early examples of the Dickson single pin ejector patent action bodies.
The first recorded example in the records of this first pattern ejector is gun No 4085, delivered on the 21st July 1887. By 1890/91 the more familiar two pin system with separate kickers and compressors had been adopted.
