25in. nitro chopperlump barrels with matt Churchill ribs gold-inlaid 'XXV' and '1', '2', '3' and '4' at the breech ends, the tubes engraved 'E. J. CHURCHILL (GUNMAKERS) LTD. ORANGE ST. GUNWORKS. LEICESTER SQUARE. LONDON.', the breech ends with acanthus scroll detailing, 2 3/4in. chambers (No.1 and No.2), 2 1/2in. chambers (No.3 and No.4), bored approx. 1/4 and 1/2 choke, No.3 wall thickness below recommended minimum, No.4 right wall at 18, toplevers gold-inlaid '1', '2', '3' and '4', automatic safeties with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' details, gold-inlaid cocking-indicators, double rolled-edge triggerguards, profuse engraving of fine acanthus scrollwork, the undersides gold-inlaid 'THE PREMIERE QUALITY', gold-washed triggers and triggerguards, 14 1/4in. well-figured stocks (cast on for the left shoulder) including buttplates, each stock inset with 'A.S.' under a crown, weight 5lb. 15oz. Provenance: Born on the 17th January 1913, Yadavindra Singh was the 9th and last Maharajah of Patiala from 1938 to 1971.
Educated at Aitchison College in Lahore, he then attended the Punjab Police School, Phillaur and in 1931 was made Superintendent of Police for the Patiala district, graduating two years later to the rank of Inspector-General. A consummate sportsman he played test cricket for India in 1934, was North Indian tennis champion and led the Patiala polo team. He was also President of the British Indian Olympic Association until 1947. After Indian Independence, he undertook numerous roles in both domestic and international affairs, acting as Indian delegate to the UN Assembly and Unesco. He was Indian Ambassador to Italy in the late 1960's and finally Indian Ambassador to the Netherlands until his death in 1974
