A PAIR OF 12-BORE SIDELOCK EJECTORS, serial no. 8012 / 3,
28in. nitro chopperlump barrels, the ribs engraved 'MORTIMER & SON. (INCORPORATING J. HARKOM & SON). 86. GEORGE ST. EDINBURGH', and gold-inlaid '1' and '2' at the breech ends, 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. imp. cyl. and 3/4 choke, No.1 right wall thickness at 19, toplevers gold-inlaid '1' and '2', automatic safeties with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' details, profusely engraved with fine acanthus scrollwork, retaining slight traces of original colour-hardening, 14 3/8in. well-figured stocks (some knot splitting toward rear of triggerguard tang No.1 gun), weight 6lb. 14oz., in their brass-cornered oak and leather case with some accessories
Provenance: These guns were built in 1936 for Capt. A.T. Fletcher, a member of the famous Scottish family, the Fletchers of Saltoun of Saltoun Hall, Pencaitland outside Edinburgh.
Captain Andrew Mansel Talbot Fletcher was born in 1880 and joined the 2nd Life Guards reaching the rank of Captain. He saw service in the Boer War but resigned in 1903. He rejoined the army in WW1 and was in the Forage Dept but was invalided out in 1917. He was a racing motorist of some note and was regarded as one of the leading shots in Scotland. He was also famous for breeding Shorthorn cattle. He died in 1950.
