A GOOD CASED 25-BORE (.577) PERCUSSION SINGLE-SHOT SPORTING-RIFLE, no visible serial number,
circa 1855, with heavy round damascus re-browned 30in. barrel, the breech-end of barrel with short flat sighting plane signed 'C.P. SWINBURN & SON, MAKERS, BIRMINGHAM' terminating in a long ladder sight of 'Jacob' design graduated to 1600 yards, elongated bead fore-sight, squared patent breech with platinum vent and engraved with borders and scrolls around a central depiction of a tiger's mask to the top, fully engraved top-tang, border and scroll engraved brushed bright lock signed 'C.P. SWINBURN & SON', carved and engraved dolphin-mouthed hammer, walnut half-stock chequered at the wrist (some repairs to fore-end), the left hand face of butt marked '23' over 'B.P.' (possibly a rack number), engraved iron furniture including large patchbox featuring a prowling lion, chequered spur to the lower tang, engraved trigger-guard bow with plain trigger, engraved ramrod throat, plain thimbles and original heavy duty ebony ramrod with brass mounts, in a period walnut case adapted, compartmented and re-lined in blue baize for this rifle and containing two gilded bullet moulds, a leather covered flask, oil bottle, patch pot, loading funnel and sundry accessories, some possibly associated
