A .451 PERCUSSION MATCH-RIFLE, serial no. 12501, WITH BALL-STARTER,
manufactured in 1865, with round, tapering 34 1/4in. Metford rifled barrel (re-blued), signed on the top in gothic lettering 'JOHN RIGBY & CO, DUBLIN & LONDON' (rubbed but legible), block at muzzle with a dove-tailed adjustable tunnel fore-sight and a stud for aligning a false muzzle or ball-starter (included), patent breech with short sighting rib, borderline engraved top-tang with folding ladder vernier sight, borderline engraved bar-action lock signed 'JOHN. RIGBY & CO' and marked with the John Rigby trademark monogram at the tail, chequered walnut pistol-grip half-stock, chequered iron heel-plate, horn-capped pistol-grip, blued trigger-guard bow and moulded horn fore-end tip with no provision for ramrod
Provenance: This rifle was the third of a batch of four match rifles delivered to the N.R.A. in 1865 and described by Rigby as 'Best Match Rifles'. The N.R.A. were prolific buyers of Rigby's product, ordering no less than 47 of these rifles in this year alone, at a cost of £20.0.0 each, and by the end of 1865 Rigby had supplied 60 units plus 3000 special bullets, 4000 caps, 60 boxes of lubricating wads and 60 ball-ended loading rods
