GOSSET, PARIS
A FINE AND RARE 13-BORE PERCUSSION PATENT UNDER-HAMMER SPORTING-GUN, no visible serial number,
first quarter of the 19th century, with browned ribbon damascus 27 1/2in. barrels, rose damascus flat raised top-rib signed in gilt script 'INVENTION GOSSET A PARIS' within foliate terminals, gold alternating ball and flower band at breech end, the breech blocks decorated with a further pair of plain gilt bands, bead fore-sight, carved raised and engraved sighting notch to top of the foliate engraved boxlock action, broad top-tang engraved with the face of Neptune and with the gilt inscription 'GOSSET BREVETE' within a gilt oval border below, twin carved under-hammers with angular cocking ears, integral moulded and carved iron fore-end with deep nipple-wells and large domed take-down screw (frozen), carved walnut swan-neck butt-stock with raised cheek-piece for the right hand mirrored on the right side, moulded and engraved semi-crescent heel-plate with vase finial and carved and moulded trigger-guard bow, the underside of barrel with roll ended ramrod thimbles and white metal tipped wood ramrod
Provenance: This shotgun was made by the Parisian gunsmith Louis-Marin Gosset sometime probably between the years 1820 - 1825. Gosset initially worked from 1793 - 1813 as an assistant to Nicholas-Noël Boutet, who was the armourer to the Crown, "arquebusier ordinair du Roi" for Louis XVI, and also made weapons for Napoleon I. Gosset's gunmaking skill and attention to detail came directly from what most consider to be the finest French gunmaker of all time.
