GREGORY, LONDON
A SCARCE 6-BORE FLINTLOCK BRASS-BARRELLED BLUNDERBUSS or MUSKETOON FOR RENOVATION, no visible serial number,
circa 1710, with heavy two-stage 21 3/4in. brass barrel with substantial banded cannon muzzle, London proofs and makers mark 'NG' below a star, the breech also with substantial moulded band, square ended iron top-tang fixed from below, radiused iron lock signed 'GREGORY' and with pointed tail, heavy walnut handrail full-stock with exposed muzzle (large inlet repair, entire butt replaced from wrist back, some cracks to fore-end), carved apron, substantial brass furniture (worn but original parts re-used, heel-plate repaired), the fore-end swelling towards the centre and replacement ramrod.
Provenance: This musketoon is most likely the product of Nathan Gregory who was made free of the Gunmaker's Company in 1677, eventually making arms for the East India Co. from 1708 to his retirement in 1712
