A FINE AND RARE 11-BORE FLINTLOCK DOUBLE-BARRELLED SILVER-MOUNTED FOWLING-PIECE, no visible serial number,
circa 1770, with unusual semi ribless half round, half octagonal 39 1/4in. barrels, the octagonal breech-ends signed on the top-flats 'JAMES SCOTT' on the left and 'CANONGATE EDIN'R' on the right, moulded bands at the intersection, applied silver boat-shaped fore-sight, acanthus scroll engraving to breech, private proofs, gold lined touch-holes, broad slightly humped acanthus and border engraved top-tang, flat, slightly curved bevel edged step tailed locks signed 'JAS SCOTT' within a border of trophies and foliage, plain pans and frizzens, French style cocks (one repaired and top-jaw replaced), walnut half-stock with handrail grip, silver wire inlay forming an apron around the top-tang and heel-plate spur, engraved silver ribbon border to the butt-end, toe and around the top heel-screw (wood chipped at toe), hallmarked cast and engraved trigger-guard bow and tang with vase finial, broad silver hallmarked fore-end tip bored for ramrod, twin escutcheonless barrel keys, moulded silver ramrod thimbles and possible period wood ramrod

Provenance: It has not proved possible to identify the hallmarks which are possibly pre revolutionary marks for Reims, France
