29in. nitro reproved damascus barrels, the rib engraved 'J. PURDEY. 314 1/2 OXFORD STREET. LONDON.' (refreshed), 2 3/4in. chambers, bored approx. 1/4 choke in both, Purdey patent thumbhole underlever, patent no. 1104 of 2nd May 1863 (first pattern) carved percussion fences, non-rebounding back-action locks, one hammer spur repaired, border and acanthus scroll engraving, the underside engraved 'PURDEY'S PATENT', 14in. stock including 3/8in. extension, weight 6lb. 11oz., in its makers brass-cornered oak-lined leather case with a plethora of accessories
Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that this gun was completed in 1863 for Lord Londesborough, and if Unsworth was correct, then this would be one of the first ten built on the 1863 patent.
William Henry Forester Denison, 1st Earl of Londesborough (19 June 1834 – 19 April 1900), known as The Lord Londesborough from 1860 to 1887, was a British peer and Liberal politician. He was also one of the main founders of Scarborough FC.
