28in. browned steel black powder only barrels, finely file cut rib with banner engraved 'JAMES MACNAUGHTON. 26 HANOVER STREET, EDINBURGH', open sights and folding leaf sight with white metal inlaid sight lines and marked for 100 and 200 yards, ramped bead fore-sight, Macnaughton patent lever-cocking hammerless action, patent no. 2848 of 1879, use number 75, fences engraved 'MACNAUGHTON. EDINBURGH.' in scrolling banners, elongated skeletal toplever, topstrap with crystal cocking inspection window, automatic lever safety with engraved 'SAFE' detail, fine border and acanthus scroll engraving, retaining traces of colour-hardening, 14 1/2in. well-figured pistolgrip stock with cheekpiece, horn pistolgrip-cap and buttplate, fore-end with grip-catch release lever, weight 7lb. 14oz., in its brass-cornered oak and leather case with morocco leather lined fitted interior, the case lid embossed 'F.J. USHER. RATHO'
Provenance: "FJ Usher" was one of the big Edinburgh brewing family, Ushers. He was the fifth son of Sir John Usher the 1st Baronet. Francis James Usher was born on the 4th July 1864. At the time of buying the rifle he resided at Norton House, Ratho, Edinburgh. Later he resided at Dunglass, Cockburnspath, Berwickshire. He died 12th February 1931.
