AZIMUTE, FRANCE
A FINE, LARGE-SCALE MODEL OF A RIVA AQUARAMA,
59in. overall and 17in. in the beam, of individual mahogany planks on hardwood frames and floors, correctly laid deck and slipper transom (again individually planked), correct cockpit instrumentation, upholstered in cream and aquamarine leather, cockpit with maker's nameplate, fittings in chromed metal and plastic, perspex windshield (slight crazing), varnished above the waterline with cream 'anti-fouling' and blue boot-top, non-functioning twin brass screws and rudders, mounted on a mahogany sled-type stand
Provenance: The vendor informs us that this model was reputedly given to Carlo Riva's nephew.
The Aquarama has become arguably, the most famous and iconic of Carlo Riva's designs and was certainly the undisputed flagship of the Riva range of fast motor yachts. Launched in 1962, the yacht took many styling cues from the swinging age that it was born in to; one of these being the wide, curved windscreen that Riva had intended to resemble the widescreen Cinerama movie format that was popular in the early 1960s. The Aquarama is a direct descendant of the Riva Tritone, the hull forms being very similar and of twin engine design, although the Aquarama was considerably more powerful; it being possible to specify units of 350hp each thus making the yacht one of the fastest craft of its type on the water. The Aquarama had a long production life and the last one wasn't launched until 1996 by which time it had already become a design classic.
Other Notes: Azimute were a highly-respected French model-making company specialising in limited, high quality production runs of classic marine craft. The maker's products were always coveted by collectors, but became more-so when the company ceased trading.
