AN UNUSUAL 12-BORE CONVERTED PUSH-FORWARD THUMBHOLE UNDERLEVER HAMMERGUN, serial no. 5764,
converted from muzzle loading, 29 3/4in. nitro reproved (in 2014) bold damascus barrels, rib engraved 'J. PURDEY 314 1/2 OXFORD STREET, LONDON', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. true cyl. in both, wall thicknesses below recommended minimum, early pattern Purdey patent action with bolstered flats, carved percussion fences, Purdey patent double bolt, patent no. 1104 of 2nd May 1863, with variant second pattern thumbhole underlever, non-rebounding sidelocks with dolphin hammers (left hammer spur damaged), fine acanthus scroll and feathered border engraving, top tang with oval engraved 'PATENT', the underside with a cartouche inscribed 'PURDEY'S PATENT', retaining very slight traces of original finish, 14 3/8in. well-figured stock including steel buttplate, weight 7lb. 6oz.

Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that the gun was completed as No.2 of a pair in 1860 for a G.A.J. Roberts with 31in. barrels.
