A SCARCE 12-BORE 1871 PATENT PUSH-FORWARD UNDERLEVER HAMMERGUN, serial no. 14674,
for 1877, 30in. black powder only etched fine damascus barrels with plain band detail at the muzzles, the rib engraved in gothic script 'JNO. RIGBY & CO. 72. ST. JAMES'S STREET. LONDON. AND AT DUBLIN.', and carved with acanthus foliage at the breech end, the tubes with further engraved band detail at the breech end, 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. 1/4 choke in both, some pitting, large action with carved percussion fences, rebounding sidelocks with large flat-side dolphin hammers, Rigby patent sprung 'hold-open' push forward underlever, patent no. 1098 of 26th April 1871, use number 810, fine acanthus scroll engraving with ornate bordering, brushed bright and reblued finish overall, 14 1/4in. boldly-figured stock including engraved steel buttplate, the fore-end with grip-catch release lever with gartered design inscribed 'RIGBY'S PATENT', weight 6lb. 14oz., in its two tiered leather case with lift-out oak lined top section (ammunition tray to lower tier)
Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that the gun was sold in September 1877 to a C.E. Bousefield
Other Notes: The gun featured in an article by Geoffrey Boothroyd in the February 1980 edition of the Shooting Times & Country magazine (a copy of the article is included with the Lot, together with some correspondence between Geoffrey and a former owner, dated 1979)
