Provenance: The vendor has kindly supplied us with the following information:

"The guns (please see also Lots 1407 and 1474) were all made for my great-grandfather, Walter Thomas James Scrymsoure Steuart Fothringham (1862-1936). Owner of three sporting estates in Perthshire and Angus, he lived primarily at Murthly Castle, Perthshire from 1890. A Lieutenant in the Scots Guards and the Forfar and Kincardine Artillery Militia, he later became a Lieutenant-Colonel in the 1st Battalion of The Scottish Horse Yeomanry, which he commanded in action in the Gallipoli campaign in 1915. He was a Founder member of the Scottish Forestry Commission, 1919-1936, being their Commissioner for Perthshire. His Purdeys have been in the ownership of the family continuously, used successively by his second son, Major Thomas Steuart Fothringham, Black Watch, and Thomas's eldest son, Robert Steuart Fothringham, who was my father."
