A VERY RARE 8-BORE SINGLE-BARRELLED ROTARY-UNDERLEVER HAMMERGUN, serial no. 3520,
for 1878, 36 1/4in. nitro reproved bold damascus barrel engraved 'BOSS & CO. 73 ST. JAMES'S STREET. LONDON.', and with short sight flat with acanthus scroll detailing, Jones patent rotary-underlever, carved percussion fence with engraved arcaded standing breech, rebounding back-action lock with dolphin hammer, fine scrolling border engraving, the action bar with ovate scrolling acanthus detailing, the screw heads with floral designs, retaining much original colour-hardening, 14in. figured stock with chequered steel buttplate, fore-end with crosspin release and horn finial, weight 10lbs. 10oz.

Provenance: Ordered on the 4th September 1878 by Robert G. Clutton, b1843, of Sherington, Tyringham, Newport Pagnell. He also resided at 3 Sussex Square, Marylebone in London.

The gun is listed in Appendix 6 of Donald Dallas' definitive history 'BOSS & CO. BEST GUNMAKERS' as dating to 1878. In Appendix 5B, listing the breakdown of gun production numbers (breech-loaders 1858-1890), he notes that the records list just 7 Wildfowling guns (of 9-bore or over) and that none appear in the records from 1891 to the present.
