A .40-90 (WINCHESTER SINGLE-SHOT) SPORTING-RIFLE, MODEL '1885 HIGH-WALL', serial no. 66396,
for 1893, with heavy 30in. octagonal barrel signed by the maker on the top-flat, dove-tailed blade fore-sight, buckhorn rear-sight, calibre designation near breech, slab-sided receiver with central falling breech-block and hammer, unmarked top-tang, highly figured walnut butt-stock with brass 'Swiss' heel-plate, under-lever opener forming the trigger-guard and figured walnut splinter fore-end with inlet ebony tip, the barrel cleaned of finish but retaining traces of colour to action, overall length 48in., weight approximately 8lbs.
